Welcome to the Homepage
Academic Network South East Europe!

Work at the project “Academic Network Southeastern Europe” was started in 2002 on Prof. Dr. Dr. Dieter S. Lutz´s initiative, former head of the Institute for Peace Research and Security Policy (Institut für Friedensforschung und Sicherheitspolitik IFSH).

The project aims mostly at the elite of young professionals in Southeastern European states to consolidatedly debate peace policy topics. Moreover, the project supports scientific and academic exchange in order to develop sustainable cooperation of young scholars, students and institutions in South Eastern Europe and the IFSH and those German institutions for peace research cooperating in the Cooperation Network Peace Research and Security Policy (Kooperationsverbund Friedensforschung und Sicherheitspolitk).

Proceeding, programs as well as the results of research and work are debated in public and published, a. o. in the internet (www.akademischesnetzwerk-soe.net). The German Academic Exchange Service (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst DAAD) generously supports the project from its funds for the special program “Stability Pact Southeastern Europe” (Stabilitätspakt Südosteuropa).
Prof. Dr. Dr. Hans J. Gießmann, Deputy Director of the IFSH´s scientific department, is head of the project. Dr. Patricia Schneider, member of the academic staff at the IFSH, is head of the network.

Obituary

We are sorry to inform the death of Prof. DAN BAR-ON, a peace-seeker and an expert in conflict resolution and transformation. He was a member of the advisory board of our network and held a seminar for us.

As a part of his remarkable career in Psychology, first specializing in therapy and research with families of Holocaust survivors, he launched a pioneering field research in Germany, studying the psychological and moral after-effects of the Holocaust on the children of the perpetrators. Since then, Bar-On has brought together descendants of survivors and perpetrators for many intensive encounters, as well as students from the third generation of both sides.

His insights created better understanding in the field of conflict transformation and reconciliation. These insights were applied around the world. As a part of this effort, he co-initiated and co-directed PRIME (Peace Research Institute in the Middle East) near Beit Jala, PNA, together with Professor Sami Adwan of Bethlehem University. One of the projects of PRIME is the "Dual-Narrative History Project", an educational initiative aimed to expose Israelis and Palestinians to the different narratives to the various historical events. You can learn more about PRIME at http://vispo.com/PRIME .
